2004年6月份召开的2004年再生（能源）会议上是2002年可持续发展的世界峰会（2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development）的后继会议，来自154个国家的代表们再次保证继续促进发展替代能源。世界银行同时宣布，到2010年它将对发展再生能源项目的贷款增加一倍，会上共宣布了192项承诺。当前，可再生能源仅占世界能源供给的5％。
