全球对地观测系统（GEOSS）的诞生由于符合人们迫切需要解决"数据丰富，知识匮乏"这一难题的渴求而大受欢迎。随着卫星的剧增，人们可以用不同的分辨率对地表和大气的不同特征进行观测，因而，将不同卫星观测数据库进行合并分析变得刻不容缓。如果没有强大的数据分析能力，这项工作几乎无法完成。同时，在环境卫生领域，如何获得精确的暴露评估资料也面临着巨大的挑战。如果有一个系统能够帮助诸如气象学、空气和水污染以及土壤和食物污染等数据的整合，将会提升危险度评估水平。卫星遥感数据特别适用于观测广阔的区域和全球系统受侵扰的变化。全球气候的变化和土地使用的变迁均与疾病的发生有重大关联。
