Scientists are increasingly skeptical of the validity of the rodent bioassays currently used in human cancer risk assessment. In 1996, international researchers joined forces in an effort to develop and assess alternative models for these purposes. The group looked at seven different models which have been accepted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Of the new testing methods, five involve transgenic rodent models. Three of the models have been determined to be possible substitutes for the currently used two-year mouse bioassay. Using these substitutes could save researchers a great deal of essential time and money.
