Abstract

Biobased lubricants have been around for centuries, but chemical engineers are just now discovering ways to alter these fluids and oils so they are more stable and thus competitive with petroleum-based lubricants. Biolubricants are also less toxic to the environment and human health than the petroleum-based products they are meant to replace. New biobased hydroelectric turbine and railroad greases and transformer oils are beginning to win over industrial consumers with their environmental and overall cost advantages.
