The Earth's Open Wounds: Abandoned and Orphaned Mines Scott Fields Abstract
Centuries and even millennia after mining ends, an abandoned or orphaned mine can present numerous potential physical and environmental health hazards. The cost of remediating abandoned mines is estimated to reach into the billions of dollars in the United States alone. As scientists work to develop mine remediation technologies, policy makers are searching for ways to ensure that government programs for mine cleanup are adequately funded and appropriately distributed.
