New Spin on an Old Fiber Lance Frazer Abstract More than one-quarter of the cotton grown in the United States is lost to waste as it is processed. Now researchers have developed a method for electrospinning waste cotton into nanofibers using a relatively benign solvent. These fibers can then be incorporated into traditionally woven products to add strength and durability. If the process proves itself, it could result in a high-end product for the cotton industry with potential environmentally friendly applications such as better filters and mats that release fertilizers, pesticides, and similar substances in a timed, targeted fashion.
