Biodiesel: Cultivating Alternative Fuels Biodiesel: Cultivating Alternative Fuels

Charles W. Schmidt

Abstract

Biodiesel is now a key player in the alternative fuels market. Experts say that biodiesel could do much to reduce U.S. reliance on foreign oil, and many are touting its environmental benefits. A number of states are pushing for greater biodiesel use, and the federal government has established a tax credit as a growth incentive. However, biodiesel is not without its own environmental drawbacks, and quality issues surround its manufacture. Still, although the biodiesel industry in the United States is young and working through some growing pains, it could offer a ray of hope for a world squeezed by declining petroleum supplies, pollution, and global warming.
