More Human, More Humane: A New Approach for Testing Airborne Pollutants More Human, More Humane: A New Approach for Testing Airborne Pollutants

Carol Potera

Abstract

Researchers at Australia's University of New South Wales have developed an animal-free alternative to traditional in vitro testing that uses human cells to test the effects of exposure to airborne toxicants. The method could also help researchers explore the health effects of nanoparticles, which increasingly are incorporated into cosmetics and pharmaceuticals even though little is known about their health effects. The researchers have demonstrated the feasibility of their technique by testing formaldehyde, nitrogen dioxide, fire combustion products, and the volatile organic compounds xylene and toluene.
