Abstract

During 2007, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued more than 40 recalls for toys containing excessive levels of lead, most of them manufactured overseas. Lead-contaminated toys became one of the biggest environmental health stories of recent times, raising questions about the adequacy of safety testing—questions that had already been raised in relation to di-isononyl phthalate, a plasticizer used in soft children’s toys. Law makers have initiated new legislation to address these issues.
