Building On Success: Assessment Categories
for Experimental Noncancer End Points Building On Success: Assessment Categories for Experimental Noncancer End Points

Bob Weinhold

Abstract

Since 1978, the National Toxicology Program (NTP) has coordinated, developed, and carried out toxicology testing within the federal government, and then informed the public about its findings. For chemical carcinogenesis bioassays, the NTP employs a set of standardized criteria for classifying the relative strength of experimental outcomes. Now the NTP has developed similar criteria for use in classifying findings on other types of outcomes, such as damage to the immune and reproductive systems, as well as developmental toxicology outcomes. The NTP hopes these new assessment criteria, which will come into use in NTP reports published in late 2009 and early 2010, will provide a more standardized vocabulary for understanding NTP results and bolster the transference to public health decisions.
