Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences
Division Director
The University of Texas School of Public Health (UTSPH) is seeking an energetic leader to become Director of the Division of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences (EOHS). A strong candidate is expected to have the ability to develop and maintain a long-term vision for the Division, to develop new programs, to increase and complement the success of existing programs, to mentor junior faculty and students, and to collaborate with faculty on research.
Qualified candidates must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate in a field closely relevant to environmental or occupational health and have progressed to the rank of Full Professor, or equivalent in a non-academic environment. The candidate should have a strong record of independent and collaborative research, outstanding communication skills, strong record of leadership and team skills, and an orientation toward professional service.
The program in EOHS has over 35 years of excellence in teaching and research. The Division has ongoing research in a variety of areas including occupational health, exposure assessment, environmental and occupational epidemiology, industrial hygiene, and air and water quality. The Southwest Center for Occupational and Environmental Health, in the Division, houses a NIOSH Education and Research Center established over 30 years ago, along with a Fogarty training center, and provides an avenue for the development of research in all related areas as well as academic training in occupational health and safety.
The UTSPH is an integral part of the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston located in the Texas Medical Center. The UTSPH has five regional campuses (San Antonio, El Paso, Dallas, Brownsville, and Austin) that contribute to a broad range of teaching and research throughout the state and region.

We are seeking candidates for the position of Director of EOHSI, a jointly sponsored institute of UMDNJ-RWJMS and Rutgers University, and Chair of DEOM, UMDNJ-RWJMS.
The ideal candidate would assume both positions and must have a PhD or equivalent or MD (New Jersey licensure or eligible). EOHSI's mission encompasses basic and clinical research in the environmental health sciences, environmental education and public policy. EOHSI serves as an unbiased source of expertise on environmental problems. The Institute's four-story, 78,000-square-foot building opened in 1991. It houses an NIEHS Center for Environmental Health Sciences, Environmental and Occupational Health Clinic, an Ozone Research Center, an EPA Environmental Bioinformatics and Computational Toxicology Center, a Computational Chemodynamics Laboratory, a CounterAct Center and a Controlled Environment Facility for stimulating human exposure to pollutants. EOHSI is home to three graduate programs: The Joint Graduate Program in Toxicology, The Joint Doctoral Program in Exposure Assessment, and the Residency Program in Occupational and Environmental Medicine. The School of Rural Public Health is seeking qualified applicants for Head of the Department of Environmental and Occupational Health. The desired start date is Fall 2010. The successful candidate will have a 12-month, tenure-track faculty appointment as Associate or Full Professor in the department.
Qualified applicants must have a relevant terminal degree, e.g. MD or PhD. An MPH or equivalent public health degree from an accredited academic institution is not essential, but desirable. Candidates should provide evidence of successful academic careers that include research and scholarship, teaching, and institutional service. Those with strong interest and significant experience in toxicology, human exposure assessment and analysis, border health studies, safety, industrial hygiene, medicine or epidemiology in the context of environmental, occupational or global settings are encouraged to apply. The Department of Environmental and Occupational Health has well-established ties with both community and industry stakeholders. Thus, candidates should also have a record of working collaboratively in transdisciplinary settings, as well as with communities and industry partners at both the national and international levels.
Academically, the department currently offers MPH, MSPH, and DrPH degrees emphasizing either Environmental Health or Occupational Safety & Health. Additional initiatives include development of an undergraduate degree in Occupational Safety and a PhD in Occupational Safety & Health. Research interests of current faculty include environmental exposure and risk assessment, occupational safety and health, ergonomics, and water-related public health issues. There is also growing interest in developing a global public health research program.

Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Cell Biology
West Virginia University Department of Microbiology, Immunology & Cell Biology invites applications from
outstanding scientists for a post-doctoral position, available November 1, 2009. Appointee for this post doctoral
position will be expected to:
- Independently perform experiments to assess exposure of mice or tissue culture lines to different xenobiotics.
These experiments will involve (1) exposing the mice to the xenobiotics, isolating their lymphocytes and performing a variety of bioassays on the cells and (2) exposing cell lines to herbicides in vitro and then performing cellular bioassays and molecular assays to determine the effects that exposure has on the function or genetic make-up of the cells (3) In vivo tumor xenograft assays. Recommend future experiments or modifications to the experiments based on the analysis of the results.

Perform experiments using specific immunoassays, biochemical and molecular assays. The individual will
independently perform routine assays including flow cytometry and analysis of flow cytometric data, western
blots, ELISAs, ELISPOT assays, isolation of cellular extracts, isolation of RNA, Northern blots. Recommend
future experiments or modifications to the experiments based on the analysis of the results.
- Record and maintain a laboratory notebook with all experimental details and results that will be used to prepare
method and results sections for manuscripts. Present results at weekly laboratory meetings in a professional
manner – Sigma Plot graphs and PowerPoint presentations.
- Perform statistical analysis on data to determine the significance of the results. Recommend future experiments
or modification to the experiments based on the analysis of the results.
- Prepare common lab stock solutions and maintain cell lines for use in experiments.
- Contribute significant information to the preparation of research grants-budget, methods, and result sections.
- Perform literature searches (PubMed) for the PI and laboratory personnel for current and ongoing research and
techniques applicable to the research in the laboratory
- Train and assist new technicians, graduate students, work study students and undergraduate students as
required in the laboratory.
- Maintain a safe and functional laboratory environment. Have knowledge of an periodically review the
requirements for animal handling (Animal Care and Use Committee), biohazards (Institutional Biohazard
Committee), radioactive reagents (Radiation Safety Committee) and all federal guidelines.
- Prepare & submit grant applications to support their salary & research costs at the P.I.'s option.

Qualifications: A Ph.D. in a field preferably involving a molecular biology project. In addition, training and
experience in the following areas: Technical skills in molecular and cellular biology, Computer literacy including the
use of statistical programs, graphic programs and word processing programs. Willingness to work with laboratory
animals required. This position will also assist the P.I. in the supervision and training of students.

research program in the role of environmental and
genetic factors in the pathogenesis of autoimmune
diseases at the Clinical Center in Bethesda,
Maryland. Staff Clinicians are physicians who
spend a majority of their time providing critical
clinical services to the NIH. The Staff Clinician is
also expected to provide clinical leadership and
the highest level of clinical care. The individual
will report to the Chief of the Environmental
Autoimmunity Group and collaborate closely
with intramural laboratory programs to study the
pathogenesis and natural history of patients with

The successful candidate for this Staff Clinician
position will have an MD degree or equivalent

Scientist with a strong background in computer science, bioinformatics and advanced statistical methodologies to participate in team research
on the epigenetic regulation of cellular processes.
The position is ideal for a person with proven
experience in theoretical sciences interested
in applying his or her knowledge to cutting edge biological problems that include control of stem cell lineage, cell differentiation, neuronal
development and aging in health and disease.
Research by the candidate will be in support
of research directed by Dr. Lutz Birnbaumer,
a Principal Investigator at the NIEHS in
the central-north area of North Carolina.
Dr. Birnbaumer's group at the NIEHS has
developed methodology to assess genome-wide changes in the methylation status of genomic DNA at single-base-pair resolution. He and his team are using this technology to study the roles of DNA methylation in health and disease. Each experiment generates 40 to 400 million data points that require analysis by investigators familiar with the computer science and statistical tools required to extract understandable
associations and differences, including
postulation of regulatory networks
and mechanisms of cell lineage definition.
Minimum qualifications include a doctoral degree (Ph.D. or equivalent) with a strong background in computer science, bioinformatics, and advanced statistical methodology. Experience or familiarity with modern concepts of epigenetics and
regulation of cellular processes will make a candidate particularly suitable. Salary is
